Telecommunication providers worldwide are working on 5G.
Every new generation of wireless networks delivers faster speeds and more functionality to our smartphones.
1G introduced us to first Analog Voice calls
2G for voice calls, text messaging, small data
3G for wireless internet and multimedia support
4G for Improved data transfer speeds that we enjoy today.
4G service speeds : 75Mbps (peak) , 5G service speeds : 20Gbps (peak).
5G is being built for an entirely new technological foundation purpose. In reality it is much more than an other G in pursuit of faster network. It is going to enable not only even better smartphones, but also deliver higher data rates, lower latency. These sort of improvements are gonna bring in a new range of digital advancements that will be enabled by our smart and connected future.
Why we need 5G ?
Billions of sensors will be built into appliances, AR and VR devices, wearable devices, security systems, health monitors, door locks and so on expected to push so much traffic on mobile data networks. From smartwatches to smart homes, It is predicted that the number of network devices will skyrocket to about 25 billion by the end – 2020. To handle these devices which may also need multiple Gigabyts per second, we not only need faster network but also lower latency.
- Enabling IOT : 5G networks are estimated to work for you at 66 times faster than 4G, centering it around the idea of IoT. That is connected devices that enable self-driving cars to make time critical decisions, automated homes acting accordingly by recording your behavior, video teachings that make you feel like you are in the same class with your friends though you are not. And more will become very important in near future. Mobile data networks will need to be very robust to handle it all.Waiting few seconds for streaming video to start over 4G is no big problem . But that’s unacceptable in things like self-driving cars where every millisecond counts. 4G needs about 15 to 25 milliseconds for one car to tell another behind it, that has begun emergency braking. But that is actually going to drop to only one millisecond with 5G and that could actually save thousands of lives, while self driving cars take over the roads.
- New realities : 5G is going to push augmented reality and virtual reality into the mainstream. Augmented reality overlays information like walking directions, product prices or acquaintances names over our view of the real world.
- Instant gratification : Download speed will increase from 4G’s peak about 150 Megabits per second to at least 10 Gigabits per seconds. That’s fast enough to download Guardians of the galaxy in four seconds rather than six minutes.
Launch date :
This is a very ambitious project so its not available quite yet. Current projections have 5G hitting the market by end of 2019 and becoming widespread around 2025. Nokia has already begun developing partnerships with major global carriers. Giving us a hint that it is still going to be a strong player in Telecom industry.
